There’s more than one way to choose a garage door, and you’ll want to pick a different kind of door for different kinds of garages. If you’re currently in the process of building or re-purposing a garage, this is something you’ll want to spend a little time thinking about – which is why we’ve put together this quick and easy beginner’s guide to the different types of garage doors. Read on to learn more about what your options are and what the pros and cons of them will be.
Canopy Up And Over Garage Door
The most common kind of garage door is the canopy door, which protrudes outwards from the door frame when open to form a ‘canopy’. They open in a variety of ways, usually involving a torsion spring and steel cables for lifting. You won’t be able to use a door like this for an opening that is more than eight feet wide, as the door will then be too heavy to support itself on the springs available. Doors of this type are quick and easy to install, however, and they can be used with most kinds of openers.
Retractable Up And Over Garage Door
Of all the various types of garage doors, retractable up-and-over models are becoming increasingly popular because they’re amongst the easiest to convert to a remote controlled model. They don’t use cables to lift the door, rather running on steel rollers to sit across the ceiling of the garage itself on the inside. One important thing to bear in mind is that the possible width is limited by the way the mechanism works – this isn’t one for a double garage.
Retractable Plus Garage Door
These follow roughly the same model, though they can be converted to work properly for wider cars and to fit with the wing mirrors of a wider car. This is a good choice for double garages, and offers a lot more flexibility.
Sectional Garage Doors
Sectional doors are becoming more and more common in America, because they’re so convenient for most people and most purposes – they fold up in sections, saving on garage space as well as on necessary machinery. There are lots of ways in which they can go wrong, though, which can be problematic for people in some cases. Generally, however, they’re a good choice.
Roller Shutter Garage Door
Like sectional doors, roller shutter doors fold in on themselves as they open – but in this case they roll up, rather than concentrating in sections. They too have a tendency to go wrong at times, but they do save on space and they’re generally a very economical option for anyone who is looking to save some money on the installation of their new door.
Round The Corner Garage Door
Rather than folding or opening up into the ceiling of the garage, these doors fold around the corner of the opening so that they run along the garage wall. They have plenty of benefits, but one of the things to bear in mind is that they can use up a lot of your available garage storage space – you won’t be able to use a large section of that wall for anything if you want to be able to open the door at all.
